Motor vehicles generate pollutants that are harmful to both our health and quality of life. Some of the major pollutants are listed below.

• Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas. It reduces the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream and reduces the effectiveness of all our key organs. Exposure to high levels of this pollutant is fatal. Even at lower levels it can affect our visual and mental function.

• Hydrocarbons react with nitrogen oxides and can form ground-level ozone. It can cause respiratory problems such as shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, and can lead to permanent lung damage.

• Nitrogen oxides (NOx) react in the atmosphere to form Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2). This can affect the health of people with respiratory illness. The long term effects of exposure may affect lung function and increase the response to allergens in sensitive people. NOx can affect the quality of our water as well as contribute to smog and acid rain effects.
  
• Carbon dioxide (CO2) is widely debated to be the cause of global warming. Although this gas does not affect human health directly, this has become a big issue world wide. Global warming affects our weather patterns and can cause draughts, floods, storms and heatwaves. In New Zealand cars are not the major source of CO2, but we can still reduce our emissions by carpooling.

Motor vehicles also have other enviromental affects such as noise pollution and the draining of the earths natural resources.
